Finding the perfect match

Each chihuahua at Tinky Chihuahua Rescue is special and unique in their own way. While every chihuahua has a distinct personality, they all need one type of person: someone to love them with all their heart. Our available chihuahuas vary; some are very young, others are seniors, some are highly active, and others are couch potatoes. Availability depends on which chihuahuas are currently in our care.

We are dedicated to matching each individual chihuahua with the most suitable home for their specific needs, ensuring a loving and lasting connection.

Common questions about chihuahuas

Many potential adopters have questions about bringing a chihuahua into their home. Here are some key things to consider:

  • Are chihuahuas suitable for children? Yes they can be but depending on age and previous environment, not all chihuahuas are suitable to be around children.
  • Are chihuahuas good with larger dogs or cats? Yes they can be but that will always depend on previous or new exposure and reactions. Some chihuahuas will be afraid and some will even want to chase cats.
  • What health problems are common in chihuahuas? Common health problems in this breed inclue dental disease, heart issues (mitral valve disease), and luxury patella (slipping kneecaps).
  • What is their life expectancy? Chihuahuas typically live 12-16 years,  although some reach 18-20 years with good health.
  • Can chihuahuas live in an apartment? Yes they can, but not all chihuahuas can! Many chihuahuas are vocalists ;)
  • Do chihuahuas need a special kind of food or diet? Each chihuahua is different in their own picky way. I can give many recommendations for high quality diets for these little munchkins.
  • Do chihuahuas require grooming? Yes, nail trimming and basic grooming. Ears stay pretty clean but still need to be checked regularly. Short haired require minimal brushing and baths. Longer haired will require more regular brushing and baths to be free of matting and dirt. I never recommend shaving a long haired chihuahua, their soft coat is easy to maintain with simple brushing and proper bathing.
  • Do chihuahuas need a fenced backyard? They dont need it but its always a bonus. Every adopter will have a home visit before adoption can be completed. Even fenced yards can have spaces a chihuahua can slip through, so we can go over outdoor time together and how to keep them safe with you!
  • Are chihuahuas able to be crate trained? Yes, most chihuahuas actually enjoy having a crate with a cozy bed for their safe space when you are not home. Not all chihuahuas need to be crated but if you choose to your chihuahua should adapt well.

We are happy to discuss these questions and more when you apply to adopt, helping you decide if a chihuahua is the right fit for your home.

Ready to adopt? Here's the next step

If you've found a chihuahua you're interested in, or are ready to begin the adoption journey, the next step is to fill out our adoption application. Once your application is submitted, it will remain on file for one year. We will contact you if you are a match for the chihuahua you applied for.
